Dia de los Muertos, A Time-Honored Mexican Celebration
Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, dates back to ancient indigenous traditions. Spanning October 31st to November 2nd, this colorful and cherished celebration is a fusion of indigenous beliefs and Catholicism that commemorates the lives of loved ones who have passed away. It is a celebration of the continuity of life.
Originally, in the Aztec civilization, festivities were held to honor Mictecacihuatl, the Lady of the Dead. Over the centuries, this celebration has evolved, blending with Spanish Catholic traditions to become the vibrant and inclusive celebration we know today.
The Ofrenda: A Visual Symphony
At the heart of Tortilla Flats’ Dia de los Muertos celebration is our Ofrenda – a visually striking altar adorned with symbolic mementos of delicate butterflies, vibrant marigolds, and special photographs. Each of these elements holds profound significance to us, representing the ephemeral nature of life, the beauty of transformation, and the enduring connection with those who came before us.
The butterflies on our Ofrenda symbolize the fleeting beauty of life. They dance and weave around marigolds with their vibrant hues. Marigolds are believed to guide the spirits back to the world of the living. Together, these symbols create a visual symphony that transcends the material realm.
